I guess it's mysterious by intent. The B&W gives it a documentary-reality feeling. And since it's an anonymous kid, maybe it symbolizes that somewhere, anytime, some kid is trying to escape from some kind of captivity.

Guessing aside, I like the line across the belly because it shows how slender many kids are at that age- totally free of belly fat. I remember how free I felt at that age.
